1001-A ATHLETIC/EXTRA-CURRICULAR PARTICIPATION POLICY (App. 6/06) |
Adopted: June 26, 2006 Revised: Independent School District #534 Athletic/Extra-Curricular Participation Policy Background Information* The Mission of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) is to provide educational opportunities through interscholastic athletic and fine arts programs for the 200,000 students who participate in them and to provide leadership and support for the 456 high schools that are members of the League. Decades of research prove that students who participate in high school activities tend to have higher grade-point averages, better attendance records, lower dropout rates and fewer discipline problems than non-participating students. National studies repeatedly report that high school activities build character, increase self-confidence, relieve tension, and support classroom learning. These studies also show that students who participate in athletic and fine arts programs are more likely to graduate from high school, stay off drugs, attend college, and avoid unwanted pregnancies. Statement of Beliefs ** Athletic and Extra-Curricular activities exist for the benefit of the students and provide educational opportunities beyond the classroom. Athletic and Extra-Curricular activities are available to all students who meet MSHSL and District eligibility requirements. The success of Athletic and Extra-Curricular activities is judged by the overall experience of the participants, not solely on the results of competition. Policy Statement B-Squad / Junior Varsity: All students who meet eligibility requirements shall be allowed to participate in athletic and extra-curricular activities offered through the School District. No limits shall be placed on the maximum number of team members allowed in any activity. All participants shall be granted playing time over the course of the season, with exceptions made for injury, student safety or disciplinary action. For reasons other than roster size, students may, for just cause, and after parent – coach (activity advisor) conference, be disqualified (cut) from participation in an activity. Varsity: All students who meet eligibility requirements shall be allowed to participate in athletic and extra-curricular activities offered through the School District. Coaches/advisors may limit the regular season number of team members (participants) in an activity to no less than the MSHSL maximum roster limit for post season participation. If roster reductions are enacted, there must be an adequate “try out” period prior to reductions being implemented. The “try out” period for athletics must be a minimum of 5 practice sessions, or until the first competition, whichever is shorter. The “try out” period for non-athletics activities must be a minimum of 1 audition session. There is no guarantee of any amount of playing time for students who participate at the varsity level. Playing time is entirely at the discretion of the coach (activity advisor). For reasons other than roster size, students may, for just cause, and after parent – coach (activity advisor) conference, be disqualified (cut) from membership/participation in an activity. * Background information taken from the Minnesota State High School League web site. ** These statements of belief are supported by the Stewartville Public Schools Extra-Curricular Philosophy document adopted by the School Board. |
