1005-E.b EXTRA-CURRICULAR ELIGIBILITY POLICY – Middle School

Stewartville Middle School Extracurricular Eligibility Policy

1. Students need a minimum of a 1.67(C-) GPA and no ‘Fs’ to be eligible for extracurricular activities and to avoid probation. This is true of all grading periods including mid-terms and quarters.
2. If the above conditions are not met the student goes on probation. This means that he/she must come in for help (from teacher or homework club) at least twice a week for a half hour minimum each time. Failure to attend both help sessions results in missing the next competition. This is a week by week stipulation. If a student fails to come in at all, he/she chooses to be ineligible for competition until the midterm or term-end reports are made public. Eligibility can be gained at that time if the conditions are met.
3. If a student is on probation and at midterm the student continues to not meet the 1.67/no F criteria for eligibility, he/she will be ineligible the remainder of the season. However, if at midterm the student fails to meet the eligibility criteria but has followed through with all probation activities, the student may be reinstated at the discretion of the coach, athletic director and principal.
4. The student is responsible for a signature slip (extracurricular probation tracker) that will keep extracurricular activity supervisors informed of his/her eligibility status. The slip must be presented to the supervisor prior to competition. No slip or no signature means no competition that day.
5. At mid-term the student should obtain a “green slip” from the activity director’s office signed by all his/her teachers to see if he/she gets off probation and/or is eligible. This green slip is then shown to the extracurricular supervisor.
6. If a student receives a failing grade in any class at the end of the 4th quarter, they are ineligible to compete in athletic contests at the start of the fall season for three contests or three weeks of the season, whichever is longer.

Sixth grade students failing a 4th quarter class may participate in fall sports on probation. At mid-quarter they need to be passing all classes in order to continue participation.
