589 EXTRA-CURRICULAR PHILOSOPHY |
Adopted: 6/28/04 Stewartville School District Policy 589 Revised: 589 EXTRA-CURRICULAR PHILOSOPHY We believe that interscholastic extra-curricular programs should partner with the general education objectives of the school system and that interscholastic extra-curricular programs are an important part of the total educational experience for all students. We recognize that interscholastic extra-curricular programs can deeply influence not only individual competitors but also the school and the total community. Therefore, the programs should seek to develop not only the skill level of the competitors, but those desirable outcomes relating to positive attitudes, good citizenship, and sportsmanship. We consider participation in extra-curricular programs to be a privilege available for those students meeting the basic eligibility standards set forth by the local extra-curricular department, state associations, and the Stewartville School District. As long as academic, behavioral, and practice obligations are met; it is the philosophy of the Stewartville Public Schools that, at the high school level, we support opportunities for all participants to grow, learn, and participate in all practices. At the middle school level, “equity” in extra-curricular activities refers to the position that we support opportunities for all participants to grow, learn, and participate in all practices and all competitive events. The goal of extra-curricular activities is to provide a well-balanced competitive program that is consistent with the philosophy of the Minnesota State High School League and directs the students towards constructive and realistic goals, learning experiences, discipline, and values related to themselves and their lives.
