VISION & HEARING SCREENINGS
Per Minnesota Department of Health guidelines, students participate in specific grade-level Vision & Hearing screenings. Students also receive vision and/or hearing screening upon request from their parent/guardian or if their teacher suspects that there may be a vision or hearing concern that is affecting the student’s ability to learn.
If at any time you question your child’s vision and/or hearing, please feel free to contact the Health Services team to request a health office screening.
To align with the Minnesota Department of Health Recommendations for vision and hearing screenings, starting in 2022 Stewartville School District will be providing the following Scheduled Grade-Level Vision and Hearing Screenings
- Kindergarten Male Students: Color Vision Deficiency Screening
- Performed during Back to School/One-Stop-Shop/Pathways Event or toward the start of the school year.
- PreK, 1st, 3rd 5th, 7th, and 10th Grade Students: Vision Acuity Screenings
- Performed during Back to School/One-Stop-Shop/Pathways Event or toward the start of the school year.
- PreK, K, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 8th, 11th Grade Students: Hearing Screenings
- Performed during the Back to School/One-Stop-Shop/Pathways Event or toward the start of the school year
Re-screens and Referrals
If your child does not meet the passing criteria for any part of a vision or hearing screening, the Health Services team will attempt to re-screen them to verify the results. If the student fails the second screening, a referral letter or email outlining the findings will be sent to parents recommending follow-up with a medical professional.
If you wish your child to be excluded from either or both of these screenings, please notify your student’s health office at the beginning of every school year. If you would like to substitute a medical provider vision or hearing screening for a school vision and/or school hearing screening just let the applicable health office health aide know and then provide the substituted medical provider vision or hearing screening documentation to the applicable school health office.
Vision and/or hearing screening may also be performed for a student if their parent or teacher is concerned regarding vision or hearing.
